Enjoy Birdwatching during your holiday in Ireland
We are fortunate to have abundant bird-life in the Glenlohane estate. We have been a bird sanctuary for over 50 years and the peace and quiet and indigenous woodland has resulted in a huge wealth of bird species. While there is ample space to walk and bird watch around Glenlohane, for more formal birdwatching there are some interesting sites to visit:
- Kilcolman Wildfowl Refuge, Buttevant, Co Cork (022 24200) – there are approximately 160 acres under water. Migration and activity is during the winter. Advanced arrangements are absolutely necessary as the site is privately owned, it’s a wonderful place to visit with a permanent hide.
- Millstreet Country Park, a 500 acre environmental and wildlife refuge, was closed during the 2017 season. It is hoped by the local community that they will be able to reopen in the 2018 season.
- The Island Woods in nearby Newmarket are another great spot for bird-life, with delightful colourful Jays and herons to see.
- The Blackwater Valley is an area of great natural beauty and there are many woodlands and riversides to explore.
